ApopulationofMya arenariaintheAnnisquamRiversystem,Gloucester,Mass.,wasstudiedfor 3yrto determine spawning frequency, fecundity, and recruitment rates under natural conditions. This population was observedtospawn twice each year, in March·April and June..July. Mya arenaria is commonly known by a number of names including the Softshell Clam, Gaper, Steamer, Longneck, and Nanny-nose. It is a circumboreal species with a native range including the Western Atlantic (Labrador, Canada to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina) and the Northwest Pacific (the Bering Sea, Russia to the Yellow Sea, China). Eastern softshell clams have an elongated shell that is thin, brittle, and uneven on the outer surface. They grow to 6 inches long and are white or grey colored with dark siphon tips. Mya arenaria was excluded from polluted sediments in an estuarine mudflat affected by petrochemical effluents, and did not appear until 2.5-4 km from the outfalls (moderate pollution) (McLusky, 1982).

Sulfate reduction and various parameters related to the sulfur cycle were examined at mm to cm scales around burrows of the soft-shell clam Mya arenaria in an intertidal sediment (Lowes Cove, Maine, USA). Sulfate reduction rates were 1.5 to 2 times higher in the inner 1 to 5 mm region surrounding the burrow than in ambient sediment In contrast, pools of reduced sulfur increased with the About Press Copyright Contact us Creators Advertise Developers Terms Privacy Policy & Safety How YouTube works Test new features Press Copyright Contact us Creators Mya arenaria has a calcium carbonate shell, which is very thin and easily broken, hence the name "soft-shells" (as opposed to its beach-dwelling neighbors, the thick-shelled quahog).
